When it comes to cooking, there are certain items that are absolutely essential. You’ll need basic pots, pans, mixing bowls, spoons for stirring and a spatula is really helpful for a lot of recipes too.

Even if you don’t actually cook, there is one kitchen gadget you’ll absolutely need – a can opener. For some people, cooking involves opening a can, pouring it in a bowl, and heating it up, and that’s okay.

Even if you love to cook, you’re bound to use canned items from time to time, and it’s really hard to open a can without a can opener. With that said, you probably think you know how to use a can opener.

We’re honestly not sure if a can opener comes with instructions because we never bothered to look for them. This little device that opens cans seems self-explanatory. All you do is put it on the can, turn the handle, and the can opener cuts the lid off of the can.

It turns out that we’ve been using a can opener wrong all these years, and you probably have been using it wrong too. Watch the video below to see how slightly changing the way you use a can opener can make a huge difference.

A few TikTok users commented on this video that they were surprised to find out that they have actually been using a can opener correctly all these years by pure accident, but many TikTok users commented that they have been using a can opener wrong their whole life. One viewer even went so far as to joke “I’m starting to think that maybe I’m doing this whole life wrong.”

We have certainly learned a lot from TikTok videos, but we wouldn’t go so far as to say that we’ve been doing everything wrong. As some viewers pointed out, there isn’t necessarily a right or wrong way. Whatever works for you is ok.

Do you use a can opener the “right” way or the “wrong” way? Which way do you prefer? Are you going to try the “right” way?
