TV Star Known For Roles In ‘Homicide: Life On The Street’ And ‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Dies At 61
Actor Andre Braugher is best known for his roles in the TV series “Homicide: Life on the Street” and more recently “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.” He also acted in films including “Frequency,” “City of Angels” and “The Mist.”
Jennifer Allen, Braugher’s publicist, confirmed the sad news of his death to Variety. He was 61 years old. He died on Monday, December 11, 2023. She did not include an exact cause of death, just calling it a brief illness.
In 1998, Braugher won an Emmy for his role in “Homicide: Life on the Street.” In 2006, he won another Emmy for his role in the FX miniseries “Thief.”

While Braugher was a talented actor and took his acting career seriously, he cared even more about his family. He met Ami Brabson, the woman who would become his wife, on the set of “Homicide: Life on the Streets.” They got married in 1991 and remained married for the rest of Braugher’s life. They had three children during their marriage, sons Michael, Isaiah and John Wesley.
In 2020, Braugher told Variety about his career and his family. He explained that he and his wife are “like-minded; we grew up in similar neighborhoods; we share the same values.” He added, “She knows me like the back of her hand, and I’m grateful for that.”
Braugher thinks his career could have been bigger, but it would have cost him time with his family. He explained:
“It’s been an interesting career, but I think it could have been larger. I think it could have spanned more disciplines: directing, producing, all these other different things. But it would have been at the expense of my own life.”
He made decisions not to shoot in locations that would take him too far from his family. He explained:
“I haven’t been in Australia. I haven’t been in Prague. I haven’t been shooting in San Paolo or whatever. I’ve got three boys, and I want them to know me as someone other than the guy who takes them to the circus every once in a while. I wanted to be there through the course of their life because I know how important fathers are.”
Braugher is survived by his wife and his children.
