The international soccer world is in mourning.

Uruguayan Soccer star Juan Izquierdo passed away on August 27, only five days after collapsing on the field while playing a game against Sao Paulo Football Club. He was 27.

According to The Associated Press, Izquierdo died in a local Brazilian hospital because he fell ill during a Copa Libertadores game in São Paulo. He died due to  “cardiorespiratory arrest associated with his cardiac arrhythmia.”

On August 26 hospital doctors made a statement that said Izquierdo was on a ventilator before he died, then had to be put into neurological critical care due to more intracranial pressure, The Associated Press reported.

The Uruguayan soccer club posted a tribute to Izquierdo on X.

“It is with deepest pain and shock in our hearts that Club Nacional de Football announces the passing of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo.

We express our sincere condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and loved ones.

All of Nacional is mourning his irreparable loss.

RIP. Juan, you will be with us forever.”

Juan Izquierdo played the center-back position for Uruguay’s Club Nacional de Footballl. His professional play started back in 2018 at local club Cerro. In 2019, he moved up to Penarol. He ended up sitting on the side lines for a bit. Next, he joined Montevideo Wanderers.

In 2022, he moved to Nacional; then, was called to the local Liverpool club. Izquierdo became one of the team’s most talented players. His team won the Uruguayan league title in 2023. This was the team’s first league title in over one hundred years.

Izquierdo came back to Nacional in 2024. He was looking for a starting position. He was in 23 soccer matches and scored one goal this season.
