Snowy Weather Hits the Denver Area Just Days Before Summer Break

It’s almost the end of May. In fact, this weekend is Memorial Day weekend which is basically the unofficial start of summer.

Some schools have already ended for the school year, and many more will be releasing kids to enjoy summer break in the next couple weeks.

When we think of summer break, we think of pool parties, trips to the beach, summer camp, and family vacations. We think of shorts and t-shirts weather. We think of long, sunny days, and refreshing, cold drinks.

What we don’t think of when we think of summer is snow. Technically, it’s still spring, but like we said, this weekend marks the unofficial start of summer, and there’s snow on the ground in Denver.

Sure, Denver is known as a winter playground. It shouldn’t be any surprise that it snows there every year. It’s not even surprising that it snows there every spring. In fact, the city almost always gets about an inch of snow in May. Denver got about an inch of snow 52 out of the past 70 years.

What’s surprising is that Denver got much more than a dusting of snow this past Monday. The city got 3 inches of snow, and some areas of Colorado even got up to 6 inches of snow.

Denver has only ever gotten 3 inches of snow in the month of May in 15 of the past 70 years. Six inches is even more unusual.

Residents might want to rethink their summer break plans. Perhaps building a snowman and making snow angels would be more appropriate activities than pool parties and backyard BBQs.

Did you know that it snows in Denver almost every May? Does it surprise you that there’s a blanket of snow covering the Mile High City?
