Salmonella Outbreak in 48 States Linked to ‘Backyard Flocks’
What’s causing the salmonella poisoning? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently investigating, and so far they suspect the outbreak is due to contact with chickens and ducks that are kept in backyards.
If you happen to keep chicks and/or ducks in your backyard, the CDC wants you to remember that it is important to wash your hands after touching these animals and after touching their eggs. It is also important to avoid kissing or hugging them. Also, make sure you always watch any children that may interact with these birds. It’s important to note that 28% of the people who have contracted salmonella poisoning so far this year have been children. and be sure to keep the ducks and chicks outside. Please refrain from bringing them inside your house.
Why does the CDC suspect the salmonella oubreak is linked to “backyard poultry”? In interviews with those who have gotten sick, 74% of the people said they did have contact with chickens or ducks.
Besides, ducks and chicks, onions from the company Thompson International Inc. are also being linked to salmonella poisoning. According to the FDA, Thompson International Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of red, yellow, white and sweet onions that were shipped from their location in Bakersfield, California. If you have any onions from this company that were shipped on or after May 1, 2020, they are part of the recall.
Onions from Thompson International Inc. were shipped to stores and restaurants in every state, and they could also be used as ingredients in other foods.
