Back in 2018, at the end of season 7 of the hit show “Suits,” there was a shakeup in the cast. Meghan Markle left the show in order to, well, marry a prince and move halfway across the world, but she wasn’t the only one to walk away from the show. Actor Patrick J. Adams also quit “Suits,” but for a very different reason than Markle.
On a recent episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s “Dinner’s on Me” podcast, Adams opened up about the real reason he walked away from “Suits” and never looked back, well, except for coming back for the final two episodes of the show in season 9.
Adams explained, “I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health and I was drinking too much [at] the end of season seven.” He continued, “I was in a zone of living a pretty unexamined life. Pretty miserable [and] I would say, pretty depressed. I didn’t have the tools to deal with that depression beyond just spending money and drinking too much, and not really knowing how to talk about it.”
He added, “I would numb myself [to] deal with my insecurity and my fears.” He admitted, “And they just weren’t working. And they were taking a toll on my relationship, for sure, but also just making me a very not present father.”
Not being the dad he wanted to be was what made him decide that things had to change. He explained, “That for me was a breaking point when I was like, ‘I think I should stop drinking probably, because I don’t wanna be that dad.’ The best thing I think I ever did for myself was stop stop drinking. It just needed to happen in order for all these other things to happen.”
Adams considered coming back for season 8, but he decided not to since the only reason he would come back would be for money. He shared, “The only reason to stay was … money.”
While he sometimes thinks about the money he didn’t make, he still has no regrets. He explained, “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the money [Gabriel Macht] made those last two years, but I never regretted the decision for a second. It was the right thing for my marriage … it was time.”
