Two Modern Family Stars Spend Thanksgiving At The Emergency Room With Their Children

This Thanksgiving took an unexpected turn for Modern Family alums Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Julie Bowen, as both actors ended their holiday in the emergency room with their children. Despite starring as siblings Mitchell Pritchett and Claire Dunphy on the hit ABC show, the two didn’t cross paths during their respective hospital visits.

Julie Bowen, 54, shared a snapshot of one of her sons outside an emergency room on Thanksgiving night. Alongside the photo, she wrote: “It’s not a holiday without a trip to the ER. (He’s fine, btw) HAPPY THANKSGIVING.”

Bowen didn’t specify which of her three sons—Oliver, 17, or twins John and Gustav, 15, whom she shares with ex-husband Scott Phillips—required medical attention. Despite the scare, Bowen assured fans that everything was under control.

In a similarly Modern Family-esque twist, Jesse Tyler Ferguson found himself in the same situation. Shortly after Bowen’s post, Ferguson, 49, uploaded a photo of himself resting in a hospital bed with his two-year-old son, Sullivan Louis, asleep on his chest.

“I have received a lot of parenting wisdom from @itsjuliebowen, so seeing I wasn’t the only one with a kid in the ER on Thanksgiving was comforting. (He’s also fine.),” Ferguson captioned the post. He also thanked the staff at Lennox Health in New York, noting, “NYC really DOES have the best healthcare.”

Ferguson and his husband, Justin Mikita, share two sons, Sullivan and Beckett Mercer. Mikita chimed in on Bowen’s post, commenting, “Us too,” highlighting their shared Thanksgiving mishap.

Their Modern Family co-star Sofia Vergara, who played their on-screen stepmother, expressed concern, commenting, “Oh no!!!!” on Ferguson’s post. The show’s cast has long been known for their tight-knit relationships, both on and off-screen.

Bowen’s support for her fellow cast members extends beyond Thanksgiving ER visits. In 2014, she played a crucial role in helping Sarah Hyland, who portrayed her on-screen daughter Haley Dunphy, escape a toxic relationship.

“I was a responsible adult that happened to be around at the right time,” Bowen shared during a 2023 podcast interview. “I just love her.”

Hyland was granted a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend Matt Prokop, citing physical and verbal abuse. Reflecting on her Modern Family co-stars’ support during that time, Hyland told People: “We’re always there for each other. And it’s wonderful. I love them.”

While Thanksgiving didn’t go as planned for Ferguson and Bowen, their experiences highlight the enduring bond among the Modern Family cast. Even years after the show’s end in 2020, the actors continue to support each other through life’s ups and downs—much like their on-screen family would.
