Marie Osmond has been in show business for six decades. She is grateful for her long and successful career on stage and on TV, but she realizes that her career is quite unusual. She told US Weekly, “I’m an exception and not a rule. To have a 60 year career where you’ve worked consistently your whole life is not normal.” With that in mind, even though her children and grandchildren have picked up some of her musical talent, she wants them to “have a real job.”

Osmond also wants her children to earn everything they have in life instead of simply having it handed to them. She explained, “You don’t love something if you don’t earn it.”

While Osmond admits that she does “help” her children, she doesn’t simply give them everything either. She explained, “Even when they get their first car, you pay for half of it. Get a job, and learn that self worth that it gives you.”

Osmond’s children know that she expects them to earn their way in life, and there is no big inheritance coming to them some day. She joked, “I worked hard, and I’m gonna spend it all and have fun with my husband.” Then she explained that while she is planning to enjoy her earnings with her husband, she isn’t exactly going to spend all of it. She plans to leave it to charity instead to “help people.” However, her children won’t be inheriting any of it.

When asked why she doesn’t want her children to inherit her money, she explained that she thinks a big inheritance would “breed laziness and entitlement.” Osmond said, “Why would you enable your child to not try to be something? I don’t know anybody who becomes anything if they’re just handed money. To me, the greatest gift you can give your child is the passion to search out who they are inside and to work.”

Not only does Osmond want her children to work, but she also wants them to finish everything they start. She said, “I’m a finisher. That’s one of my rules with my kids. If you start it, you finish it. You don’t ever have to do it again, but you gotta finish.”

While Osmond is far from done performing and touring, she’s taking more time for herself to enjoy life. She explained,”I’m the fun grandma” while talking about going to Disney World with her family over the holidays.

Osmond also makes sure to spend plenty of time with her husband, who she remarried in 2011. She called him her “best friend” and added that the secret to their happy married is to “keep dating.” She explained, “That’s why you got married to begin with.” She added, “I’m so grateful to be happy.”
