Lupita Nyong’o started dating Selema Masekela back in 2018. Now, in 2023, it appears that their relationship is over. According to a lengthy Instagram post shared by Nyong’o, the breakup had to do with a “deception.”

Nyong’o began her post by explaining that she realizes “there are much more important things going on in the world right now.” However, she felt it was necessary to share the news of her breakup. She explained, “It is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust.” While she didn’t name that someone by name, it is clearly Masekela.

Nyong’o described herself as “in a season of heartbreak because of a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by deception.” She explained that she is fighting the urge to “run into the shadows and hide.” Instead, she is “choosing to face the pain.”

She continued, explaining that she is “sharing this” in the hopes “that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else out there experiencing the grip of heartbreak who is poised to try and escape from the pain and miss out on the wisdom that comes from it.”

While this announcement was posted on October 19th, fans were curious about the state of Nyong’o’s relationship with Masekela after seeing pictures of her with Joshua Jackson. Fans were also curious when they noticed that she had delted all of her Instagram photos with Masekela.

As far as the rumors about Jackson, so far, they are just rumors. According to sources who spoke to TMZ, Nyong’o and Jackson are just friends.

Masekela has yet to publicly comment on the breakup.
