Have kids? You probably also have an Elf on the Shelf that makes its rounds each holiday season. The idea came from a 2005 children’s picture book by Bell Chanda and Carol V. Aebersold, but has turned into family fun traditions where parents pose an elf around the house leading up to the holidays.

The kids think the elf is spying on them to make sure they’re end more nice than naughty, but traditionally, the elf winds up doing something naughty himself. Some parents get really creative in how they make the elf show up—it’s not always simply up on a shelf, that’s for sure.

Over the years, Elf on the Shelf has become quite the competition of just how far you can make the elf go. In fact, some have even made the elf do some pretty inappropriate (yet hilarious!) things.
