The body of Chenoa Nickerson has been found. She was hiking, and was swept away On August 22. A flash flood hit Grand Canyon National Park a little bit before 1:30 p.m. She was 33.

Her body was located in the Colorado River in the late morning of August 25. Nickerson’s husband was also swept away; but, he was rescued by rafters.

NBC news reported that Nickerson’s body was found around river mile 176 by someone on a boat used for tours of the Colorado River. The location where she was found was about 20 miles away from where she went missing in the Havasu Canyon according to the National Park Service.

She was pulled into Havasu Creek about half of a mile from where Havasu Creek meets the Colorado River.

Late-summer thunderstorms are common in this area where the flash flood occurred according to the National Weather Service. There may be another chance for rain this week.

Over 100 people have been rescued from the flooded area of Grand Canyon National Park.

Chenoa Nickerson’s family issued a statement thanking first responders and all who helped find Nickerson.

“Our family would like to express our sincere and endless gratitude to the men and women of the National Park Service Search and Rescue team for their tireless, selfless, and courageous efforts,” the statement said.
