Gerry Turner, the first Golden Bachelor, and Theresa Nist, the woman who won “The Golden Bachelor” and Turner’s heart, looked perfectly happy and in love on their wedding day. It seemed like happily ever after, but somewhere in the past three months, something went wrong.

Just three months after saying “I do,” the golden couple is getting divorced. The couple opened up about their reason for getting divorced on Good Morning America. They explained that while they still loved each other, there was another reason they couldn’t make their marriage work – distance.

Turner told host Juju Chang, “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation, our living situation, so forth and — and we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to — dissolve our marriage.”

Turner lives at his lake house in Indiana while Nist lives in New Jersey. The couple explained that they’ve looked at multiple houses together in multiple states, but they just can’t seem to find the right place to live together. Nist explained, “We looked at homes in South Carolina, we considered New Jersey, and we just looked at homes after home, but we never got to the point where we made that decision.”

Part of the struggle to find a home was that they were also both considering their families, not wanting to be too far away. Turner shared, “The thing that strikes me the most in our conversations, it’s been how dedicated both of us are to our families … So we look at these situations and I think we just feel like it’s best for the happiness of each of us to, to live apart.”

During the interview, the couple continued to hold hands and shared that they do still love each other. It seems that they’ve simply decided to stop trying to find somewhere to live together, and long distance isn’t working for them. Turner said, “There’s no doubt in my mind, I still am in love with her. I root for her every day.”

Nist feels the same way. She said, “Yeah, I still love him.”

Despite their love for each other, Nist and Turner plan to continue their search for love elsewhere.
