‘Game of Thrones’ Actor Has Passed Away

Actor Ian Gelder is best known for his roles in the TV series “Torchwood,” “State of Emergency” and “Games of Thrones” as well as the film “Pope Joan.” According to IMDB, he acted in 71 projects throughout his career and has one upcoming project that is currently in production.

Sadly, Gelder was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in December 2023, and on May 6, 2024, he lost his battle with cancer. He was 74 years old.

Gelder’s husband and life partner for the past 30 years, actor Ben Daniels, shared the sad news of Gelder’s death on Instagram. He posted a picture of the two of them during the Christmas holidays, and he wrote a lengthy caption explaining Gelder’s cancer battle and sharing some of the things he loved the most about Gelder.

Daniels wrote, “It is with huge huge sadness and a heavy heart broken into a million pieces that I’m leaving this post to announce the passing of my darling husband and life partner Ian Gelder.” He added, “I’d stopped all work to be his carer but neither of us had any idea that it would all be so fast.”

Daniels described Gelder as “my absolute rock” and “the kindest, most generous spirited and loving human being.” He also praised him as a “a wonderful wonderful actor and everyone who worked with him was touched by his heart and light.”

During his cancer battle, Daniels shared that Gelder “coped with his dreadful illness with such bravery, with no self pity.” For example, he shared that when the picture was taken, Gelder has just been released from the hospital after “the worst three weeks,” but “you can still see his joy and love shining through.”
