Once upon a time, Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were engaged and in love. They were taking a cross-country road trip together and documenting their journey on social media. It sounds almost like a modern fairytale, but just like a fairytale, there is tragedy and mystery and not always a happily ever after.

Petito’s parents last talked to her in late August. Then, Laundrie returned to his parents’ home in Florida with the van he and Petito had been traveling in. There was one huge problem. Petito wasn’t with him.

Petito’s parents reported her missing on September 11, 2021. That’s when the official search began. They were hoping she would be found alive, but instead, her remains were found in Bridger-Teton National Forest, and authorities estimate that she died 3 or 4 weeks before she was found.

After Petito’s body was found, Laundrie was named a person of interest. Unfortunately, he also went missing. His parents claim they don’t know where he is, and the search for their son still continues.

While Laundrie has yet to be found dead or alive, we now know more about what happened to Petito. The Teton County Coroner’s Office has revealed that her cause of death was strangulation.

Petito’s family is hoping that somehow something good can come from their daughter’s untimely death. Jim Schmidt, Petito’s step-father, told reporters, “We’re just hoping that through our tragedy losing Gabby, that in the future, some good can come out of it, that we can help other people who may be in a similar situation. What can we do to help people?” He continued, “We need positive stuff to come through this tragedy that happened. We can’t let her name be taken in vain. We need positive stuff.”

Do you think Laundrie is still alive? Do you think his parents know where he is? Where do you think he is hiding? To answer Petito’s step-dad’s question, what could her family do to make something positive come from their daughter’s death?
