Former President Bill Clinton was admitted to a Washington, D.C., hospital on Monday afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever, his spokesperson told CNN.

“The president is fine,” Angel Urena, deputy chief of staff to Clinton, said to CNN, she added that the former president plans to be home for Christmas. “He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving.”

Clinton, 78, was at his Washington home when he was taken to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. According to an aide, he is expected to stay at the hospital overnight and is described as “awake and alert.”

The 42nd President of the United States, has faced a few significant health challenges over the years while maintaining an active lifestyle. In 2004, he underwent successful quadruple bypass surgery to address severe coronary artery disease, a pivotal moment in his health history.

Six years later, he had laparoscopic surgery to repair an abdominal hernia, recovering without complications. Like many, Clinton also contracted COVID-19 during the pandemic but fortunately experienced only mild symptoms. Known for promoting heart health and leading an active lifestyle, he has emphasized regular exercise and a balanced diet.

This August, Clinton delivered a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and remained highly active on the campaign trail throughout the fall. Since the election, he has maintained a busy travel schedule, promoting his newly released book, Citizen: My Life After the White House.
