Former NFL quarterback and ex-husband of Kristin Cavallari, Jay Cutler, 41, was arrested Thursday night in downtown Franklin, Tennessee. He faces charges including DUI and illegal gun possession after rear-ending another vehicle, PEOPLE confirms.

A spokesperson for the Franklin Police Department said Cutler was taken into custody and later released on a $5,000 bond. He faces multiple charges: DUI (first offense), possession of a handgun while under the influence, refusal to submit to field sobriety tests, and failure to avoid a collision. According to a police press release, officers responded to a minor crash just after 5 p.m. on Thursday. They found that Cutler had rear-ended another vehicle. Officers reported smelling alcohol on him, noting that he was slurring his words and had bloodshot eyes.

Cutler refused sobriety tests at the scene but was taken to a local hospital, where a blood sample was collected under a search warrant. Police also discovered two firearms in his vehicle, including a loaded pistol.

The former NFL quarterback is best known for his time with the Chicago Bears. Born on April 29, 1983, in Indiana, Cutler played college football at Vanderbilt University before being drafted 11th overall by the Denver Broncos in 2006. After three seasons in Denver, he was traded to the Bears, where he spent the majority of his career, setting franchise records for passing yards and touchdowns. Cutler briefly retired in 2017 but returned for one season with the Miami Dolphins before officially retiring in 2018.

Jay Cutler was married to Kristin Cavallari for almost a decade, starting in 2013. The couple, who share three children—Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor—finalized their divorce in 2022. During their marriage, they starred in the popular reality show Very Cavallari, which chronicled their life in Nashville.
