In December 2023, singer Cher filed for a conservatorship for her son, Elijah Allman. In court documents at the time, Cher claimed that Elijah wasn’t capable of managing his finances because he was a drug addict. A judge initially denied Cher’s request, but there’s more information.
According to Page Six, Elijah’s wife, Marieangela King, claims that Cher is “manic depressive.” In court documents, Marieangela wrote that Cher “is not capable of managing her own affairs — let alone those of Elijah.” She added, “To my knowledge, the petitioner has never known the security code to her own home, does not drive, does not prepare her own meals or dress herself, and has admitted to me that she is a ‘manic depressive.'”

According to Marieangela, Cher’s personal assistant, Jennifer Ruiz, is currently in control of Cher’s public and private affairs. She believes that if Cher were appointed Elijah’s conservator, it would actually be Jennifer who would be making decisions about Elijah’s life. Marieangela also stated that she doesn’t think her husband needs any conservator at all.

Elijah also submitted a statement to the court. In the statement, he wrote, “I could have demanded that my mandatory distributions be made to me directly as required by the trust, but I did not do so.” He also clarified that he has been using a financial manager to issue payments from the trust left for him by his late father, Greg Allman.
As far as Cher’s claims about Elijah’s alleged drug problem, Elijah issued a statement about that too. He claims that he was voluntarily tested for drugs three times in January. Every time, the drug test came back negative. He stated that he hasn’t taken any “illicit substances” since October 2023.
