Legendary singer Elton John is opening up about a serious health struggle that’s deeply impacted his day-to-day life.

In a new interview with The Times, the 78-year-old music icon revealed that he has been unable to see out of his right eye since July due to an infection—an issue that forced him to delay his new album last November.

“I can see you, but I can’t see TV, I can’t read,” John told reporter Will Hodgkinson. “I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up. It’s distressing.”

Known for his vibrant stage presence and emotional performances, Elton John is no stranger to adversity. But losing part of his vision, especially at this stage of life, has been particularly difficult.

“You get emotional, but you have to get used to it,” he shared. “Because I’m lucky to have the life I have. I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here… So you say to yourself, just get on with it.”

The superstar, who has long spoken about the importance of family, especially his two sons with husband David Furnish, admitted that one of the most painful parts of his vision loss is not being able to fully experience his children’s activities. As any parent can imagine, missing out on watching your kids grow up and play sports can be heartbreaking.

Despite the challenges, John has kept his spirits high and remains focused on the positive. His perspective is one of resilience and gratitude—acknowledging the pain while emphasizing how fortunate he still feels.

And he’s certainly not slowing down. While his eyesight issues delayed his album, John recently released Who Believes in Angels?, a collaboration with acclaimed singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile. The project, which dropped on Friday, has been met with enthusiasm from fans and critics alike.

In live performances and behind-the-scenes glimpses, Elton and Carlile sound nothing short of magical together, proving that his creative spark hasn’t dimmed—even in the face of adversity.

This latest health update comes just a year after the legendary performer wrapped up his final tour, Farewell Yellow Brick Road, marking the end of a five-decade touring career. Though he’s stepped back from the stage, Elton John’s passion for music and storytelling clearly continues to burn bright.

His honesty about his vision loss is a reminder that even global icons face personal battles—but it’s how they respond that truly inspires.

Elton may be struggling to see, but he’s still lighting the way.
