The Born is a hip, Gothic neighborhood in Barcelona, Spain, where craftspeople and fishermen thrived in the 17th century. Today, the nautical 17th century architecture still stands, and the gorgeous buildings are being put to good use by the creative minds of modern Spanish tenants. One family in particular (a family of architects and interior designers, appropriately enough) has turned one of the already beautiful Born flats into a design masterpiece. Watch the video below and admire the ingenuity of this boat-inspired Barcelona apartment.

One of the most amazing things about the design of this flat is the utilization of cubes. These cubes – some hidden in the walls, others floating in the air – give an ultra-hip vibe to the entire apartment and also act as a clever way to utilize space.

My favorite cube? The shower, where it seems like you’re floating off the ground! The automatic blinds in the shower are amazing as well, for a little privacy.

I’m also in love with the combination of modern wood and the original 17th century brick walls. The two materials go together surprisingly well and give a warm, Old-World-meets-New-World feel to the flat.
