Cindy Williams of ‘Laverne & Shirley’ Reacts to the News of Costar Penny Marshall’s Death

Since the death of Penny Marshall was announced on Monday, fans and friends are reflecting on her work, legacy, and personality. One person who is remembering her fondly is former Laverne & Shirley co-star, Cindy Williams.

Williams and Marshall starred on the beloved sitcom, a Happy Days spinoff, which ran for eight seasons and maintained a friendship off screen for decades. In a statement to Today, Williams spoke about losing her friend:

“What an extraordinary loss. My good friend, Penny Marshall is gone — one in a million. Utterly unique, a truly great talent. And, oh what fun we had! Can’t describe how I’ll miss her.”

Although Williams left the show early for contractual reasons, that didn’t stop her and Marshall from being as close as family. She once said in an Emmy Legends interview that Marshall was like a witness to her life.

TV viewers who grew up watching the iconic show may have also recognized the duo when they did a guest appearance on Nickelodeon’s roommate comedy Sam & Cat in 2013. In that episode, Sam (Jennette McCurdy) and Cat (Ariana Grande) were trying to help the feuding friends reconcile.

It was the first time in years that audiences got to see these ladies reunite on screen. Penny Marshall was 75 years old and passed away this past Monday from diabetes complications, but the mark she left in Hollywood as an actress and director will not be forgotten.

Did you know Williams and Marshall were such good friends behind the scenes? Can you relate to having a friendship like theirs?
