Actress Frances Sternhagen is probably best known for her roles in movies like “Misery” and “The Mist” as well as TV shows like “Cheers” and “Sex and the City,” but she was also a stage actress. She was nominated for 7 Tony Awards and won 3 Tony Awards. She was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for her role on “Cheers.”
Now, a representative for Sternhagen has released the sad news that the talented actress has died. She was 93 years old, and her cause of death was natural causes. in a statement, her representative explained, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that our dear mother, actress Frances Sternhagen, died peacefully of natural causes in New Rochelle, NY, on November 27th, 2023, at the age of 93. She is survived by her six children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of her remarkable career and life is planned for mid-January, near her 94th birthday. We continue to be inspired by her love and life.”
In addition to the statement, Sternhagen’s son John Carlin shared a tribute to his mother on social media. Alongside multiple photos, Carlin wrote, “Frannie. Mom. Frances Sternhagen.On Monday night, Nov 27, she died peacefully at her home, a month and a half shy of her 94th birthday.” He added, “I’m very lucky I was able to call her my mom, my friend, my song and dance partner.” He continued, “She always encouraged my writing, and enjoyed my singing.”
Carlin ended his post by writing directly to his mom, “Fly on, Frannie.” Then he added one last touching sentiment, “The curtain goes down on a life so richly, passionately, humbly and generously lived.”

Sternhagen started her career at theMilton Academy in Massachusetts where she performed while also teaching acting, singing and dancing. She went on to perform in off-Broadway and Broadway plays, performing in her first Broadway play in 1955. Meanwhile, her screen debut was in 1951.
