Man Shares Hack for Broiling Chocolate Chip Cookies to Perfection

We know when some of you step into the kitchen, you’re the super supreme master of your domain. There is not a shallot that’s safe around you nor a casserole that does not meld together perfectly on your watch.

But what does your broiler do, though? Admit it: you (and I) rarely use the thing. It’s hot and powerful, and when used right, the broiler and your recipe will go together like. . . well, cookies and milk. Speaking of cookies, this chocolate chip cookie tutorial is worthy of your attention.

Why? Because this dude broils his cookies to get them just right. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Most of us haven’t, and it’s easy to see why you’ll want to watch this cooking hack, whether you plan on baking cookies or not.

Don’t feel uneasy about this broiler business. This short video is a straight-to-the-point recipe that includes instructions on how to make big, chewy choco chip cookies that, if all goes right, are not burnt. You can get on board with that, right? Your broiling skills are key.

So, YouTube user Adam Ragusea – whose voice sounds similar to Alton Brown’s – starts out by explaining his recipe while tossing all the ingredients into a stand mixer. You have to watch to appreciate and get the full effect.

For those who prefer traditional measurements rather than “glugs” and his non-measurements, here’s the gist according to Ragusea’s written description:

Chocolate Chip Cookies – Slightly Broiled

Materials:

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • 2 sticks salted butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. molasses
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 1/2 cups bread flour
  • 12 oz. bag chocolate chips

Instructions:

  1. Warm the Oven

    Preheat the oven to 375°F.

  2. Mix and Chill

Melt the butter and mix in the other ingredients until a soft dough is formed. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes or more.

  3. Roll It

Roll the dough into golf ball-sized balls and flatten the tops with your hands. Place on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper.

  4. Broil Your Cookies

Turn the broiler on its high setting. Put the cookies in the oven and broil until the tops are golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

  5. Bake and Cool

Set oven back to bake. Pop cookies back in the oven for an additional 10 to 12 minutes. Remove, cool.

Honestly, it is best to watch this to get the steps down just right. Of course, if you are intimidated by mixing white sugar and molasses together or any other ingredients in this version, you can always use your own favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe.

These are for people who prefer a softer, chewier cookie instead of the crispy type, and best of all, it gives you a reason to crank up that broiler for something sweet.
