Billy Joel Cancels Madison Square Garden Concert

Billy Joel was originally scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden in New York City tonight, December 19, 2022, but at the last minute, he announced to fans that this concert would have to be postponed.

Just one day before the concert was scheduled to take place, Joel wrote on Instagram, “I’m disappointed to share that I’m under doctor’s orders for vocal rest due to a viral infection so unfortunately, I must postpone my Monday, December 19th concert at Madison Square Garden to June.”

Joel realizes that many of his fans may have traveled for this concert and may have made special arrangements in order to attend. Therefore, he realizes a cancelation with short notice and with six months before the concert is set to be rescheduled can be quite disappointing. He wrote, “I’m so sorry to let you know so close to show day, but I was hoping to be closer to a full recovery by now. Sadly, that hasn’t happened. I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.”

Joel has been performing on a monthly basis at Madison Square Garden since 2014. He has performed there about 100 times.

Currently, the December 19th concert is rescheduled for June 2nd, but fans who need to make travel arrangements to attend might want to hold off because the date could change again. According to Billy Joel’s website billyjoel.com,All tickets purchased for the December 19, 2022 concert will be honored on Friday, June 2, 2023 and will not need to be exchanged. Please note, the June 2nd performance is subject to change if it conflicts with a playoff game.”

Many fans who had tickets to tonight’s concert expressed their disappointment on social media, but they also seemed quite understanding and wished Joel a quick recovery. For example, one concert-goer wrote, “14 year old superfan travelled to watch from London with dad.. devastated.”

Another person wrote, “We’ve come over from London to see you play in your home city. We will be back in June. Get well soon, that’s the most important thing.”

One comment reads, “Noooooooooo! I’ve come from Australia – I’m devastated but totally understand.”

While nobody will be seeing Joel perform live tonight, we can still watch him perform. Enjoy this video of Joel’s song “Piano Man.”
