“I am heartbroken to share that my father passed away at home on June 27th, after a valiant fight against a long illness. He was known for excelling at every creative discipline imaginable and also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials. He would find that joke funny. He was never not funny. My dad will be deeply missed by his wife and daughter, by his friends and coworkers, by fellow artists and comedians and musicians, and—the sign of a truly exceptional person—by many, many dogs. I loved him tremendously.”
In the 1970s, Mull started working in television and film, where he became a familiar face to audiences. He is best known for his role as the cynical bar owner, Garth Gimble, on the mock soap opera “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” in the 1970s. This role led to a spinoff, “Fernwood 2 Night,” a parody of talk shows, where he played Barth Gimble, a host with questionable ethics.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Mull appeared in various TV series and films. He had notable roles in shows like “Roseanne,” where he played Leon Carp, Roseanne’s boss, and later in “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” as Willard Kraft, a school administrator. His film appearances include “Clue,” where he portrayed Colonel Mustard, and “Mr. Mom.”
In his later years, he worked on shows such as “Two and a Half Men” and “Arrested Development” and “The Cool Kids.” Some of the movies he is known for include “Clue”, and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” His most recent film was released in 2018, “A Futile And Stupid Gesture.”
Mull is survived by his third wife, Wendy Haas, and his daughter Maggie.
She is a television writer and producer.
