5 Tips for Reversing Summer Skin and Hair Damage

Now that summer’s almost over, what do you have to show for it? Slightly bronzed skin and lighter hair? Or sunburnt skin and damaged hair? If you’re dealing with the effects of the latter, take a look at some tips from care2 for restoring your skin and hair just in time for fall:

Soothe a Sunburn

Try this trick that was inspired by Diane Hanson of Delluva Vinotherapy Day Spa, a wine-based skincare spa in New York. Simply wash a handful of grapes and freeze them. After several hours, remove the frozen grapes from the freezer and mash them up. Apply them as a masque to the skin that’s sunburnt. Leave the masque on for 5-10 minutes. According to care2 “the cool, resveratrol-rich grapes [will] suck the heat out of your skin while simultaneously helping to fight sun-damage triggered pre-mature aging.”

Dry Hair

Sun and salt water can do a number on your hair in the summer. Try making this homemade treatment that you can use twice a week to restore moisture and shine to your hair. Here’s what you need:

  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp coconut oil
  • 2 tbsp chopped pumpkin
  • 2 tbsp coconut milk
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • 1 tsp chocolate extract
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

In a small saucepan, heat vegetable oil and coconut oils until slightly warm, mixing together. Remove from heat and cool. Add remaining ingredients to oils and mix in a blender until you achieve a uniform consistency. Massage mixture through hair and comb through carefully. Leave on for 5-20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm water. Massage vigorously to remove all of the mixture. Cover and refrigerate the remaining mixture. Discard after 5 days.
