When you dine out at a restaurant, what do you do right before you leave? Do you tidy up your booth, stack your plates at the edge of the table, and leave your area neat? Or do you leave everything astray for the wait staff to clean up since that’s their job and not yours?

According to a recent TikTok video that blew up, the answer to that question might rely on what generation you were born in to.

“Younger generation vs older generation,” @sallymander_ captioned the popular video, which shows a neat booth where the party clearly tried to help out by cleaning up before leaving, followed by a messy one, where nothing was considered for the waiter.

“I’m not the waitress… I was the customer to the left,” she explained in the comment section of the video. “Even though it’s not ‘our job’ it takes 5 seconds to pick up after yourself and requires 0 effort.”

The video racked up more than 90,000 likes and 663,000 views because of how intriguing it was—but it was also met with some controversy.

Some people of the younger generation agreed that they too tidy up their seating area before leaving a restaurant.

“Weird – everyone I know (Gen X) does this and none of us are servers or ever have been. But I’ve never seen anybody under the age of 30 do this,” one person wrote.

However, some people thought it wasn’t fair to blame this difference on generations, thinking it was more of an indicator of how people were brought up.

“Literally stop blaming generations and blame the way someone was raised… I’m 28 and clean up and so does my 17 year old brother…” someone said.

Other people who’ve worked in the restaurant industry say not cleaning up after yourself is really not a big deal—and stacking plates isn’t really something people should pat themselves on the back for anyway.

“As a busser I kinda don’t like when people stack cause it ruins my flow and the way I do it. Best to just tidy it up instead,” someone said.

“I worked as a server and didn’t like people stacking their plates. It messed with my way of doing things,” another agreed.

“I worked in restaurants and literally never once cared if someone left a table looking like either of these,” someone else posted.
