One of the 6 Woman Who Experienced Rare Blood Clots After Taking J&J Vaccine Is In Recovery

By now, you probably know that the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is temporarily paused in the United States due to a potential link between the vaccine and rare blood clots. Six women who received the vaccine later developed blood clots. That’s 6 out of almost 7 million people who have received the vaccine. One woman died, and one is still hospitalized.

We now know the identity of the woman who is still in the hospital fighting for her life. Her name is Emma Burkey, and she is only 18 years old. The Las Vegas resident received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine around April 1st, 2021, and just days later, she experienced seizures and blood clots in her brain. She has received three brain surgeries to try to repair the damage from the blood clots.

Burkey was originally taken to St. Rose Hospital, Siena Campus in Henderson, Nevada, for treatment. Later, she was airlifted to Loma Linda Hospital in southern California. She is still in the hospital, and her parents, Russ and Kathy Burkey, have been with her since the beginning. Her older brother, Cooper Burkey, is staying home to take care of the household while the rest of his family is away.

A GoFundMe was set up “to help the family with the expenses of her treatment, airlift, and the 100 other things that happen when life is interrupted.” The goal was originally set at $10,000, but so far over $30,000 has been raised.

According to a recent update on GoFundMe on April 20th, Burkey is making progress, but she still has a long way to go.

Despite the severe reaction their daughter had to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, Burkey’s parents still think it’s important to get vaccinated. According to a family spokesperson, they realize that their daughter was unfortunately “one in a million.”
