Willie Nelson’s Son Remade His Classic Hit

When we think of true country music, chances are we think of the great Willie Nelson. He’s performed everything from Georgia On My Mind to On the Road Again, and is a true country legend.

But the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to his family. Willie’s son, Lukas Nelson, is just like a clone of his father, and it’s seriously making us wonder if singing is a genetic trait you can inherit!

It’s not easy to become of the country music legends like Willie Nelson, but 29-year-old Lukas is certainly making a name for himself with some of his work.

It wasn’t until the early 2000s when he began performing along with his dad, but he started getting into music much before that. In fact, he was just 13 when he joined Willie’s band and began to tour with him.

“When I was a kid, just getting into music, my dad said, ‘You’re good, but not that good,’ ” says Lukas. “I thought, I can take this two ways: I can stop playing, or I can get that good.”

He chose the latter, as he began playing guitar and writing songs whenever his spare time allowed for it. “I put in hours like I was an Olympian,” he says.

But don’t worry—Willie would never have forced it upon him to follow in his footsteps. It was something that Lukas, in addition to his younger brother, Micah, 27, were exposed to in their younger years, and just happened to have a love an appreciation for it.

“Ever since they were born, there’s been musical instruments around them where they grew up,” says Willie. “There’s a cabin at our place with a piano and five or six guitars. So it was just a natural thing. I didn’t try to push it on them. I kind of let ‘em hear me play, and the next thing you know, I see Micah over on the drums and Luke’s playing the guitar. And then the next thing you know, they’re playing good!”

So good in fact that not too long ago, Lukas released his fourth studio album titled “Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real.” Micah also serves as an auxiliary member of Promise of the Real. Check them out on Facebook.

Lukas and his band even got to tour with Neil Young for two years when recording the album “The Monsanto Years.” He’s truly made it in the country music world.

If you don’t believe us, maybe you need to hear him at work. He recently recorded a remake of one of Willie’s most popular songs, “You Were Always On My Mind,” and it’s giving us all the feels.

The best part about this recording is that it was totally unplanned—just an impromptu jam session while he was on a cruise. But it’s gaining lots of attention, for good reason. Check out the cover in the video below!

Isn’t Lukas the spitting image of his father (in both his vocals and his looks!)? Do you have any of Lukas’ albums? What do you think of his performance here?
