Frugal Couple Creates Gorgeous Last Minute Wedding Cake Out of 2 Costco Sheet Cakes For Less Than $50

There’s no doubt about it that weddings can be very expensive. Sure, a bride and groom could choose to go to the courthouse and call it a day, but if you want to celebrate with your family and friends, that usually means a big, fancy reception.

If you’ve ever planned a wedding, you know that there’s a long list of essentials that add up fast. We’re talking big ticket items like a venue, a wedding dress, flowers, food, a DJ and you can’t forget the wedding cake.

The centerpiece of any reception dinner is the cake. It’s usually tiered and usually very fancy. It will be featured in many pictures, and the bride and groom might even save the top tier to eat on their first anniversary, as tradition has it.

While we’re big fans of weddings and receptions, we always love tips on how to save money. That’s why our jaw nearly hit the ground when we found out that one couple was able to DIY their own wedding cake for just $50. It looks so much more expensive. If you didn’t know how they did it, you would seriously assume they shelled out big bucks.

Jeremy and Gosia wanted to spend as little as possible on their wedding so they could splurge on their honeymoon instead. They weren’t planning on having any flowers at their wedding, and they planned on just serving cupcakes instead of buying a fancy wedding cake.

At the last minute, Jeremy decided to ask his sister Jessica to help them with wedding plans. She’s an expert at saving money and DIYing, so she quickly came up with a way to get them not only flowers but also a wedding cake for just $50.

Jessica bought two sheet cakes from Costco, and with the help of Jamie Warley, Gosia’s brother-in-law who just happens to be a chef, they cut the cakes, stacked them, and refrosted them. For decorations, they bought $10-worth of flowers from Trader Joe’s and used some of them to transform the cake into a truly gorgeous masterpiece.

Instagrammers desperately want to know how to recreate this masterpiece themselves, and let’s be honest, we do too. Even though we’re already married and don’t have a wedding to plan right now, we’d love the chance to recreate this cake for a milestone birthday or a baby shower.
