After Vet Was Scammed Out of Thousands, Strangers Get Together to Help Pay His Rent

Scamming the elderly is, unfortunately, a fairly common occurrence. They’re typically the first ones to receive calls from scammers (you know—the ones asking for your credit card info to pay off some random taxes you still owe or to tell you your granddaughter is in jail and needs money—they’re typically unaware of scams like these and offer up their info more easily).

In addition, a recent scam to the elderly made headlines after a plumber was found guilty of conning several older people into paying thousands of dollars for his services. One man even claimed the plumber made his mother take out a $50,000 home equity loan because he wanted cash on everything.

And now, it’s Willie Boyd, an elderly Air Force veteran from Oklahoma, who recently just got scammed out of rent money.

Sadly, Willie endured a stoke not too long ago, which left him with limited mobility. His limitations were so harsh that his former apartment complex manager reached out to him to help him run any errands he needed and help make sure he was paying his bills. Nice, right?

The manager was someone Willie has known for years—someone he felt he trusted. But it soon became clear that she couldn’t be trusted at all.

One day, Willie had received a note on his door (from his new apartment manager) saying that the thousands of dollars that he owes in back rent and fees from missing his payments were due in just a few days.

Willie was very confused at first. He knew he always paid his rent and had no idea why he’d have any late fees or owe anything extra.

That’s when his family started to look into what was going on. Even though Willie had bank statements to prove the money was coming out of his account, after checking out his payment history a little closer, it turns out that the old apartment manager was taking it for her own and completely scammed Willie out of his rent money.

In the end, Willie owed more than $2,000 in back rent and fees.

While this could have been a very sad ending to the story, it thankfully doesn’t end here. Members from Veterans Corner, a nonprofit organization with a mission to help out military members, got word of Willie’s story and knew they wanted to help.

They decided that, due to his past service, members at the organization would present him with a check to pay his rent—in full.

Willie could barely control his emotions. The gesture was so heartfelt that he has trouble even talking about it, crying tears of joy.

In the meantime, Willie is pressing charges against the woman he thought he could trust.
