Our military members sacrifice so much for our country and our freedom. For some people this means spending time away from family and missing important events, but for other people, it means losing their limbs or their lives.

Caleb Brewer, from Tucson, Arizona, enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 2005. Then, in 2012, he joined the Green Berets. This Sergeant 1st Class ended up being deployed to Afghanistan in 2015, and that’s when his life forever changed.

While in Afghanistan, Brewer stepped on a bomb. He was lucky to survive, but he suffered from many injuries including blood clots, infections and even a brain injury.

Brewer retired in 2016 and returned home for good. Yet, life would forever be more difficult. You see, Brewer ended up having both of his legs amputated due to all of his injuries. He had to figure out how to live life as normally as possible without legs.

He was committed to rehabilitation, and he quickly adapted to walking with prosthetic legs. He was committed to working out as well. In fact, he doesn’t just exercise for his own physical fitness. He actually helps other men and women who have suffered from wartime injuries by showing them how to stay healthy and physically active.

When actor Gary Sinise, famous for his role as Lt. Dan in the movie “Forrest Gump,” heard about Brewer, he wanted to help him out.

In case you haven’t seen the movie “Forrest Gump,” Lt. Dan ends up having his legs amputated due to a wartime injury. Sinise isn’t just passionate about helping wounded soldiers because of this role though. He’s actually been helping veterans since the 1970s. However, it’s easy to see the connection between the character Sinise once played and Brewer’s real life situation.

Sinise contacted Brewer and told him to apply for RISE, which stands for Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment. This program is part of the Gary Sinise Foundation, which Sinise started in 2011 to support military families. RISE specifically helps wounded veterans by providing them with special homes and vehicles.

Brewer applied for RISE and quickly found himself the recipient of a fully customized smart home. From shelves that pull down to wheelchair height to a special heated seat in the bathroom, and a custom home gym, this house was made specifically with Brewer and his family in mind.
