Harry and Meghan Have Made Time’s Most Influential People List for the First Time

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made headlines a lot over the past few years, and it hasn’t always been flattering. The British press was brutal to Meghan, and then, after stepping down as senior members of the royal family, a rift between the family seemed to grow.

Harry and Meghan are definitely ones to take action. Instead of sitting quietly and doing what they were told to do to make the royal family look good, they struck out on their own and started over in California. According to Harry, they didn’t have a plan for what they would do when they relocated or how they would afford the security they felt they needed. Then they said yes to opportunities from Spotify and Netflix. Things seemed to be falling into place.

But Harry and Meghan aren’t just sitting back enjoying their lives quietly. It’s important to the couple to make a difference, and that has earned them a spot and a cover photo on Time’s list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2021.

Jose Andres wrote the feature about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. He started by reminiscing about a time when Harry was being interviewed in Afghanistan back when he was an Apache helicopter gunner. During the interview, there was a bang. Soldiers in the background could be seen trying to get away, but Harry did the opposite. Andres wrote, “In one swift motion, he stands up, rips off his microphone and runs toward the action.” That sums up Harry’s attitude about helping others.

Harry seems to be well matched with Meghan who is also passionate about helping others. In her case, she is particularly passionate about helping women and girls.

Andres wrote, “Springing into action is not the easy choice for a young duke and duchess who have been blessed through birth and talent, and burned by fame. It would be much safer to enjoy their good fortune and stay silent.”

Then, Andres explained that Harry and Meghan aren’t the type of people to “enjoy their good fortune and stay silent.” He continued, “They turn compassion into boots on the ground through their Archewell Foundation. They give voice to the voiceless through media production. Hand in hand with nonprofit partners, they take risks to help communities in need—offering mental-health support to Black women and girls in the U.S., and feeding those affected by natural disasters in India and the Caribbean.”

He ended the piece explaining that Harry and Meghan are compassionate and truly try to help instead of just offering opinions.

Does it surprise you that Harry and Meghan have made the cover of Time’s list of the 100 Most Influential People of 2021? Do you think they are among the most influential people?
