Thousands Reach Out to Dad After His Sentimental Post About Ice Cream Trips With Sons Goes Viral

Being a parent is hard. It’s hard from the moment you find out you’re going to have a baby, and it doesn’t get easier as you watch your kids grow up and become independent. You know you’re about to face the hardest part of parenting: letting them go.

One dad from the Atlanta area got pretty sentimental about his sons going away to college, and he shared his feelings on Instagram. He started by explaining a tradition that he and his 3 sons have. We wrote, “So me and my boys have had a weekly tradition going back years now, where once a week or so we would go to DQ after dinner. We would sit at the same table and order from the same little old lady, never deviating from our routine.”

It sounds like a sweet tradition (literally) to go to Dairy Queen every week, but 57-year-old Brandt Barber wasn’t just writing about a shared tradition. He was sharing the tradition in order to explain how the tradition is no longer the same. He shared a photo of himself with his three sons and wrote, “Here we are last pic at DQ before Brooks headed to be a big college boy.” One of his sons had left for college.

The dad followed up the post with another post of himself with the two sons who were still at home. He wrote, “And then there were 3. DQ tradition continued but our numbers while strong were dwindling. Me with Bryce and Luke at DQ. Soon they will head to college what then….”

There was yet another follow-up post, and this one was a real heartbreaker. Barber shared a picture of himself alone at Dairy Queen in the same booth but without his sons who had all left for college. He explained that it’s not the same. He wrote, “And then there was 1. DQ was never really the thing, spending time driving to and from and talking, listening to their music and watching all of them interact as brothers, now that was the thing. Maybe I’ll get by here every now and then and certainly when they are all home but with them not here it’s just ice cream. :)”

Barber’s son, Brooks Barber, the first son who left for college, was so moved by his dad’s posts that he shared them on Twitter writing, “Why did my dad have to go this hard on insta and why am I crying in Nashville rn.”

Barber’s son isn’t the only one who is moved to tears by this sweet and loving dad’s posts. Many people responded pointing out how sweet this is and that not everyone is lucky enough to have a dad this wonderful.

Over on Instagram, the sweet dad has been getting a lot of love too. One comment reads, “Your and amazing dad and your kids are so blessed to have you in there life.”

Another one of Barber’s followers wrote, “My kids are 4 and 8, I just cried my eyes out.”

Did you have any traditions with your dad or a father figure like this dad’s trips to DQ? Does this dad’s posts make you want to start new traditions like this with your own children?
