Former The Voice contestant Ryan Whyte Maloney has tragically passed away at the age of 44. The Clark County Coroner’s Office in Las Vegas confirmed to PEOPLE on Tuesday, January 28, that Maloney’s death was ruled a suicide caused by a gunshot wound to the head.
Just a day prior, on January 27, the musician shared a video on his Instagram Stories, seemingly filmed at a bar.
“Nine fine Irishmen for a private party tonight, and we will be rocking,” he said.
Ryan Whyte Maloney, a talented singer-songwriter and former contestant on The Voice, was born in 1981, in Traverse City, Michigan. Music was a passion from a young age, and Ryan honed his skills as a multi-instrumentalist, mastering guitar, piano, and vocals.
His big break came in 2014 when he appeared on Season 6 of The Voice. During the blind auditions, Ryan wowed the coaches with his powerful rendition of Journey’s “Lights,” earning him a spot on Team Blake Shelton. His time on the show showcased his versatility and raw talent, propelling him into the national spotlight.
After The Voice, Ryan continued pursuing his music career, performing at venues across the country and releasing original music. His sound blended elements of rock, country, and soul, resonating with fans who appreciated his authenticity and heartfelt lyrics. Tracks like “Hillbilly” and “Arizona Skies” became fan favorites.
In 2024, Ryan Whyte Maloney held a regular residency at Blake Shelton’s venue, Ole Red, where he performed frequently and captivated audiences.
Over the course of his career, Maloney had the privilege of sharing the stage with renowned artists such as Tim McGraw, Morgan Wallen, Rascal Flatts, Shakira, Usher, Ed Sheeran, and many others.
