Adan De La Cruz, a senior football player at Rowe High School in McAllen, Texas passed away on August 22. He was 17. Adan was at a house party over the weekend, where alcohol was served to minors, and Adan sustained what turned out to be a fatal injury.
“We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of one of our students,” the school district said. “Adan De La Cruz, a senior at Rowe High School, passed away today. He was a wonderful young man, very well liked, and much admired by his peers. He will be missed but not forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time.”
Adan played linebacker for the last three years and was one of Rowe’s most promising starters for 2024. He was a First Team All-District 15-5A DI in his junior year.
Rowe High school canceled their scrimmage for August 22 and the Meet The Warrior event for August 23.
Per reports obtained by ValleyCentral.com (local news channel), on August 17, the police responded to the 4700 block of North Betson Rd over a disturbance. The police were notified Adan De La Cruz tried to jump from the residence roof into a pool. Instead, Adan slipped and hit his head on the ground.
When responders arrived at the residence, they saw several minors fleeing the residence. There were also reports of red disposable cups with open beer bottles.
When responders reached Adan he was lying on his back in an unconscious state near the pool. One man was holding the victims back while another was attempting chest compression.
The responding officer saw blood on Adan’s body and told the man to step aside as he checked for a pulse. The officer found a laceration on the back of the victim’s head. He found a slight pulse and started chest compressions. Next, the Fire Department arrived and took over and provided medical attention to Adan.
Snapchat videos show Adan lose his footing on the side of the gazebo roof and hit the ground head and neck first.
The police discovered Jaime Islas and his son had provided the alcohol to the minors at the party. During questioning Islas admitted that he asked his brother-in-law to have a party at his house. Per the police report, the brother-in-law thought the party would be 3 people.
Both Jaime and his son were charged for providing alcohol to minors and issued a $30,000 bond.
