Texas Family Of Four Missing At Sea, After Boat Capsizes In Alaska
A Texas family of four on vacation in Alaska is currently lost at sea. The Coast Guard has suspended search missions. The boat they were on turned over near Homer, Alaska on August 3.
The family members David Maynard (42), Mary (37), Colton (11) and Brantley (7) were on a 28-foot aluminum boat with 4 other people when water started to sink the boat at about 7 p.m.
A call for help went out and a boat named Salty Sea rescued four people from the life raft, they did not have any injuries.
Per the Anchorage Daily News, the Coast Guard started a rescue search of an area about “16 miles west of the Homer Spit. Waves were at 2 feet and winds were less than 5 knots when the boat capsized, authorities have said.” The water temperature is estimated to have been in the low 50’s Fahrenheit.
On August 4, the search was suspended at about 6 p.m. The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter, airplane, cutter, and two more vessels for the search effort. There were also Alaska Wildlife Troopers and good Samaritan boats who joined the search.
The Maynard family are from Troy, Texas. Mary worked as a travel nurse while David managed the kids and his lawn care business. The boys enjoyed playing soccer and baseball. Reports indicate the family was visiting family and friends in Alaska.
The family set up a GoFundMe page to help cover “unexpected expenses that the family would have to cover so suddenly.” So far, they have reached almost $11,000 of a $10,000 goal.
The post states, “The Maynards are not just friends, they are family to me and a lot of others. By now, a lot of us have heard about the tragic news. For those who don’t know, this sweet family of four was lost at sea on their vacation to Alaska. Mary’s parents are still there hoping to bring them home. This family is going through a lot right now. We are asking for prayers and donations if you can, to help with unexpected expenses that the family would have to cover so suddenly.”
In addition, “The Maynard’s left a huge imprint on many people, from the laughter they brought to us, the love and family-oriented connection they provided, It is indescribable the void that will be left behind but I know if we come together as a family and a community they would know how much they meant to everyone.”
