Yesterday a tragedy occurred in Uvalde, Texas. An 18-year-old gunman entered Robb Elementary School and opened fire. He killed a total of 19 children and 2 teachers. The motive for the shooting is unknown.

Families are grieving. Parents everywhere are hugging their children a little tighter. It’s hard to make sense of a tragedy that doesn’t make sense. When we send our children to school, we want them to be safe. We expect them to be safe.

How did this mass shooting occur? According to Lt. Chris Olivarez, a spokesperson for the Texas Department for Public Safety, the shooting took place in one classroom at the school. The shooter barricaded himself in the classroom with the students and the two teachers who he shot. Besides the 21 deaths, there were also multiple students who were injured.

Olivarez explained to CNN, “It’s a small classroom, you can have anywhere from 25 to 30 students in there, plus there were two teachers in there … It was a classroom setting, a typical classroom setting where you have mass groups of children inside that classroom all together, with nowhere to go.”

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the shooter legally purchased two AR rifles just last week. The first was purchases on May 17th, and the second on May 20th. At the elementary school, one of the guns was on his person, and the other was in his car.

As mentioned in the video, before going to the school, the gunman shot his grandmother. According to officials, his grandmother worked at Robb Elementary School until 2020.

University Health, a hospital in San Antonia, has been caring for the victims who were injured in the shooting. According to their most recent update, a 9-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl are both in good condition, a 10-year-old girl is in serious condition, and a 66-year-old woman is also in serious condition.
