Television News Anchor Passed Away At 48

Former Alabama News 19 anchor Melissa Riopka passed away September 14 after suffering from acute myeloid leukemia. She was 48.

Per her obituary “In July, 2023 Melissa was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and fought a prolonged battle with complications after a bone marrow transplant.”

Riopka grew up in Cullman, Alabama, raised by her grandparents. While attending the University of Alabama she interned at WHNT during college.

After graduation she went on to work at TV stations in Chattanooga and Birmingham as a reporter and anchor. She started at WAAY in 2010 in Huntsville, Alabama then moved to WHNT in 2013, eventually working as weeknight anchor. In 2018, she transitioned to the morning shift as anchor.

Melissa departed from News 19 in March 2022, but her influence continues to resonate through the colleagues who had the privilege of working with and knowing her.

She is survived by her loving husband and two children.
