Suspicious 1:30AM Takeout Order at KFC Led To $26,000 in Coronavirus Fines

While fast-food joints remain open during our ongoing coronavirus pandemic, people are generally going by the drive-in to order food for themselves or their families. It would seem a little odd ordering food for 20 people, right?

Right—and that’s why a pair of customers got fined $26,000.

It all happened at a KFC in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia—an area that has just initiated a second lockdown after coronavirus cases rose dramatically. As part of the rules, people are to stay at home unless it’s absolutely necessary to go out. Of course, large gatherings are also not allowed.

So why would these people be ordering food for 20 people? Unless they have a family of 20, an unlikely story, then they were probably breaking the rules.

The order was made right before two paramedics went through the drive-in. When they noticed the weird order, they spoke to the KFC staff who o then called the police, who were able to track down the rule breakers.

When the police got to the home of the people who placed the large order and low and behold, there were 18 people celebrating a birthday party. The crew tried to make it seem like there were only two people, but it turns out 16 others were hiding in the back.

“That is absolutely ridiculous, that type of behavior,” said Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police Shane Patton.

The cheap takeout order wound up costing the guests much more: As in a $26,000 AUD fine (about $18,000 in U.S. dollars.).

“It’s a very expensive night,” Patton said. “That’s a heck of a birthday party to recall and they’ll remember that one for a long time.”

That’s for sure!

It might seem extreme to some, but it’s important to abide by lockdown laws when in place. Though Australia has been relatively unharmed with a low rate of COVID-19 cases, when it recently spiked the country had no choice but to issue a stay-at-home order, seeing as what the pandemic has done to other countries.

In addition to the lockdown, anyone who must leave their home is required to wear a mask. Anyone in violation of these rules will be fined, just like the partygoers. When it comes to the health of others, there can’t be any tolerance.

“This type of conduct, this type of blatant, obvious, deliberate disregard for the chief health officer’s guidelines, we will be enforcing,” said Patton.

Have you found it hard to abide by the rules that have come out of this pandemic? What do you think the punishment should be for those who don’t abide by the mandates?
