Tonight’s ‘Super Pink Moon’ Will Be the Largest and Brightest Supermoon of 2020

If life is seeming a little bleak right now, what with practically everything being closed or canceled, it might help to have something to look forward to. We have some good news. There’s something super to look forward to tonight!

On April 7, 2020, you can see a supermoon from your own backyard, and it’s not just any super moon, it’s the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year!

April’s supermoon is known as the Super Pink Moon, but the moon won’t actually be pink. We know; we were disappointed too. Watch the video below to find out why the moon is really called the Super Pink Moon.

Gather your whole family to gaze up at the sky when the moon rises over the horizon, and enjoy this natural phenomenon. While the moon will be biggest and brightest right as it appears over the horizon, it will still be bigger and brighter than usual throughout the night. So, if you don’t miss the very moment it rises, don’t worry. It’s still worth moon-gazing.

Are your kids home from school? Are you looking for something interesting to teach them about? The Super Pink Moon is a great excuse to study the moon, especially since many young children are fascinated by the night sky.

According to Jackie Faherty, an astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, one of the best ways to start learning about the moon is to study the phases of the moon. National Geographic Kids has a great guide to the phases of the moon that’s easy to understand for kids (and parents).

A fun activity over the month could be recording the phases of the moon with your kids. You’ll be home anyway, right? Might as well do some science!

Are you going to look for the Super Pink Moon in the sky tonight?
