Make Your Appliances Sparkle With These Easy Cleaning Tips

Cleaning old appliances—it’s a common problem that we feel doesn’t quite get the attention it deserves. Anyone who rents or is simply not able to afford a full kitchen upgrade knows all too well what it’s like to live with a dingy, discolored fridge or stovetop. It can really make your cooking space look dirty, no matter how much time you spend sanitizing and scrubbing!

That’s why we searched far and wide to find the absolute best tips for getting rid of unsightly discolorations from your appliances for good. These tricks will help them shine once again so that they can keep your kitchen looking great for years to come!

Our current go-to domestic guru, YouTuber Cassandra with the channel ClutterBug, dishes on how you can best get rid of marks, streaks, and unpleasant caked-on stains, all by using products that you probably already own.

Here are a couple of our top picks from ClutterBug’s video.

  1. Scrub away the stains on your white appliances with baking soda

If unsightly stains on your white appliances have got you down, consider polishing them away with this tried and true concoction. It only requires ONE ingredient and just a couple of minutes of cleaning time! How amazing is that?!

Simply grab some ordinary baking soda and sprinkle a liberal amount onto the discolored area. No absorption time is needed; just scrub the powder away with a damp synthetic sponge.

To get into those hard-to-reach areas, our host suggests completing the process with a toothbrush. This works great on microwave vents, dials, and buttons of all shapes and sizes.

  2. For shinier appliances, use a spray-on wood cleaner

We know what you’re thinking—a wood cleaner for appliances?! We’ll admit it, we were dubious (and a little nervous!) about trying this on our appliances at first, but we really think that Cassandra is onto something with this hack!

All you need to do is spray some wood cleaner—our host uses Pledge—onto clean appliances and gently wipe away. This works on both plastic and glass-coated items of all colors, and even leaves behind a glossy, streak-free shine.

The best part is that if you repeat this process every month or so, food splatters won’t have much to stick to, which helps keep the surfaces clean in between deep scrubs.

As we mentioned, if you’re an owner of older appliances, we think this particular tutorial will really click with you because she focuses solely on items that still work well, but don’t necessarily look their best. After all, there’s just no point in throwing out things that still perform when you can make them look like new again!
