Today, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is thankful that his mother is alive. He took to Instagram to share that his mother, Ata, was in a car crash at 3am last night. He thanked the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles Fire Department “for being so caring & focused” and “for staying on phone and talking me thru it all.”
Johnson called his mother “a survivor.” He explained, “This woman has survived lung cancer, tough marriage, head on collision with a drunk driver.” He added that considering all that she has survived, it makes him believe that “angels and miracles [are] real.”
Johnson posted a picture of a red car with the right front bumper smashed in and concluded the post by writing, “I got one parent left, so if you still got your mom and dad make sure you hug ‘em hard, cos you never know when you’ll get that 3am call we never want to get.”

Fans and celebrity friends quickly flooded the comments. Ronnie Coleman wrote, “I lost my only parent almost 6 years ago. That hole never heals and i miss my mom every day. God Bless yours and may she live forever.”
Tyrese wrote, “Praise God we love you angel mother!!!!!!!!!! Praise God in the name of Jesus you will ALWAYS be covered…. We love you mother!!! GRACE!!!!!”
Back in 2010, Ata fought and won the battle against stage 3 lung cancer. In 2014, she survived a head-on collision with a drunk driver.
Years before that, when Johnson was just 15 years old and his family had recently been evicted from their home, his mother attempted to commit suicide. In 2018, he told Express, “She got out of the car on Interstate 65 in Nashville and walked into oncoming traffic.” He continued, “I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road.” Johnson shared, “What’s crazy about that suicide attempt is that to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn’t.”
Ata has certainly survived some close calls. We agree with Johnson, “if you still got your mom and dad make sure you hug ‘em hard” because you never know what the future holds.
