This Recent Episode of “Roseanne” Has Caused Some Controversy

America is only three episodes in with the newly revived Roseanne show and it’s either earning rave reviews or stark criticisms. Right now, it’s the second week’s episode that has people divided about the fictional character and the direction of the show.

Quite a few things rubbed people the wrong way, but it was Roseanne’s treatment of her granddaughter Harris that had viewers talking. If you’re familiar with the nineties version of the show, then you know that the Conner family was known for their somewhat brash communication and parenting style.

The Conner kids had their own personalities, and the teenage attitudes that were part of Becky and Darlene were no exception when it came to their behavior being a major point of contention – and the episode plots. Both daughters were especially bent on being who they were on their own terms.

That did not always fall in line with Mom’s rules and expectations. Fast forward to Roseanne 2.0, and this new generation of Conner kids are also following their own way. It seems that a little bit of history may be repeating itself with Darlene’s ornery daughter, Harris. Grandma was not having it, though.

This particular episode saw 15-year-old Harris getting into a spat with her grandmother over her excessive use of the washer and dryer. The kid started running her own Etsy business and Roseanne confronted her about showing respect for the home she shared and everyone else living in it.

Here’s the first part that got the audience riled up:

“My problem is you’re acting like you own the place and we don’t even own the place. You’ve got it real good here so you better start showing some gratitude instead of acting like an entitled little b*#*%.”

In what felt like a mini reincarnation of an insolent Darlene at that age, Harris called her grandmother a stupid hillbilly. Where did this back-and-forth lead? Before getting to the part where the fam finds out the truth about Harris’s “business”, a fight ensues.

Things got physical when Roseanne pushed Harris’s head under the kitchen faucet, wrapped her leg around the girl to pin her down, and sprayed her with water. She did that while saying, “Welcome to the hillbilly day spa!”

Did you catch those two things? While some fans were happy to see Roseanne take a stand, others were bothered by her approach, calling it abusive and dark. Some were quick to point out the irony in how the old Roseanne felt terrible about spanking due to her abuse-filled childhood but the new Roseanne seems to have forgotten that bit.
