With the divorce rate being as high as it is, we all know that marriage takes a lot of work and commitment. And years of being with the same person is quite the accomplishment.

That said, film director and actor Ron Howard and his wife Cheryl recently just celebrated their golden anniversary: A whole 50 years from their very first date!

Howard shared a photo of he and his wife with the caption commemorating the special occasion and giving his fans some background on their first date when they were just wee little high schoolers in puppy love (yes, the two are actually high school sweethearts!).

“Nov 1 1970 Cheryl & I went on our 1st date. We went to see a re-release of Stanley Kramer’s It’s a Mad Mad Mad World and then got some pizza at now-defunct Barnone’s in Toluca Lake. Quite a start, right?” he wrote.

The caption continued to discuss how the two celebrated their 50th anniversary, paying off the photo of socks with Cheryl’s face all over them that he posted in the photo.

“Today we are celebrating with these kind of socks we ordered (Cheryl’s w/my mug got held up) and a trip to our local take-out pizza place,” he wrote. “We’ll be driving in the same ’70 VW Bug I picked Cheryl up in 5 decades ago. It runs great. So do we.”

They sure do!

But besides re-living your first date, what exactly is the secret to a happy marriage? Howard actually has nothing super complicated to say about that—just a clear open line of communication is what works best for them.

“There’s no tactic other than communication is really important,” he explained. “You have to learn to communicate and have difficult conversations in constructive ways.”

He also explained that luck has to be on your side. “Beyond that, there’s an element of luck because people either grow together or they don’t and I don’t think you can force that,” he said.

The two have truly lived a full life together with their four children: daughters Bryce Dallas, 39, 35-year-old twins Jocelyn Carlyle and Paige Howard, and son Reed Cross, 33. And we wish them nothing but more happy days to come!
