Joann, the fabrics and crafts retailer, is shutting down more than half of its 800 locations in the coming months as it works through the bankruptcy process.

In a statement to CNN, the company announced that approximately 500 stores across the U.S. will be closing, emphasizing that right-sizing our store footprint is a critical part of our efforts to ensure the best path forward.”

“This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our team members, our customers and all of the communities we serve,” a Joann spokesperson told CNN.

Joann Fabrics, officially known as Joann Stores, is a leading American retailer specializing in fabrics, crafts, and home decor. Founded in 1943 as a single store in Cleveland, Ohio, Joann has grown into a nationwide chain with hundreds of locations. The company caters to hobbyists, DIY enthusiasts, and professional crafters, offering an extensive selection of fabrics, sewing supplies, yarn, seasonal decor, and art materials.

Known for its frequent sales and discounts, Joann Fabrics provides customers with an affordable way to pursue creative projects. Court filings show locations in all 50 states are affected. States hit hardest include California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. Here is a list of known store closings.

 

Court documents per USA Today reveal Joann’s closure plans by state, including 61 stores in California, 36 in Florida, 33 each in Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, 26 in Illinois, 24 in New York, 21 in Washington, 20 in Indiana, and 19 in Massachusetts.

The retailer’s downsizing follows its second bankruptcy filing in less than a year. Joann first filed for Chapter 11 in March 2024 but quickly restructured as a private company, keeping all stores open. In its latest bankruptcy filing, the company cited unexpected inventory shortages, with some key products seeing major slowdowns or even a complete halt in production.

Going out of Business Sales may start Saturday, February 15.
