On Wednesday December 4, 2024, Brian Thompson was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan. He was 50 years old. The police describe this as a “brazen, targeted attack.”

Thompson was the CEO of United HealthCare. , which is the largest privately owned healthcare insurance company in the United States. He was shot early in the morning when he was entering the Hilton to attend UnitedHealth Group’s investor day.

After the tragic attack, United Healthcare canceled the event.

NBC News reports that the police responded to a 911 call around 6:48am that morning. The call to 911 happened just 2 minutes before officers arrived at the scene.

When the officers arrived, Thompson was on the sidewalk. He had gunshot wounds in his back and leg. He was transported to the Roosevelt Hospital, and he was pronounced dead at 7:12am.

The gunman arrived at the hotel about 5 minutes before Thompson showed up. Several people passed the gunman before the incident, and noticed him standing there waiting.

Thompson was by himself when he approached the hotel. He walked over from the nearby Marriott where he was staying.

When the gunman saw Thompson approaching, he started shooting. There’s security video footage that captured the occurence.

The gunman arrived at the scene on foot. He started to flee on foot as well but eventually sped away on an e-bike, disappearing somewhere in Central Park.

According to detective Joseph Kenny, the gunman was wearing all black including a black face mask. He also wore black and white sneakers. The most unique thing he had with him was a gray backpack which Kenny describes as “very distinctive.”

It took five days for police to find the man they suspect of committing the crime. According to the Associated Press. He was eventually arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvnia.

The suspect is a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate named Luigi Nicholas Mangione. He is facing murder charges.

When he arrived at the courthouse on December 10th, he shouted, “insult to the intelligence of the American people.” Those are the only words he has spoken in public since his arrest.

According to his social media posts, it seems that he was somewhat inspired by unabomber Ted Kaczynski who he described as a “political revolutionary.”

An anonymous source who spoke to the AP, shared that when he was arrested, Mangione had on him a 3-page document in which he stated “To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.” He added, “I do apologize for any strife or traumas but it had to be done. Frankly, these parasites simply had it coming.”

In a statement released on social media, Mangione’s family stated, “Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest.” The family added, “We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
