Farmers’ Almanac Predicts a ‘Polar Coaster’ for the Winter Ahead

Summer hasn’t officially ended yet, but we already have some idea of what winter is going to look like. We hope you enjoyed the long, sunny days over the past few months because, for most of the United States, it’s going to be a cold, snowy winter, even more so than usual.

Before we dive into what exactly the Farmer’s Almanac predicts for winter 2020, remember that predicting the weather is not an exact science; however, if you like to plan ahead, go ahead and buy that extra warm winter coat.

The Farmer’s Almanac is calling this coming winter’s weather a “Polar Coaster” (get it?). It may not be as much fun as a rollercoaster (unless you’re a school-aged child hoping for snow days), but it’s certainly supposed to have some ups and downs, like lots of snow falling down, and the weather dropping to even colder temps than usual for two-thirds of the country. Wait, what were the ups again? Bundling up maybe?

Check out the map below to get a glimpse at exactly which parts of the country are going to be most affected by this Polar Coaster.

If you live in the western third of the  United States, you’re in luck. Most likely, your winter weather will be about what you’re used to. Lucky you.

If you live in the eastern third of the United States, including the Great Lakes, Midwest and Great Plains, get ready for even more snow, rain and sleet than usual. Time to dust off that snow blower.

Most of this heavy winter precipitation and colder-than-usual weather is expected in January and February, but it’s possible that it’s going to be a long winter lasting into April.
