Retired ‘Old Coots’ Set Up Table at Farmer’s Market in Salt Lake City to Give Free Life Advice

Trying to think of something to get your friend for his birthday? Wondering why your cat is peeing on everything in your house? Just trying to figure out what the heck to make for dinner?

Sometimes we just need some random life advice—and who better than to get life advice from than some “old coots” who’ve already lived a large chunk of it?

The self-proclaimed “old coots” are a group of retired friends who made it a goal to get together once a week. And while that was all fine and dandy, they soon realized they could be doing something a bit more productive with their time.

“We were sitting outside, bored stiff from talking to each other, and I said, ‘You know what? I’m going to get us a booth across the street at the farmers market, where we can give advice,” said Tony Caputo, 69, one of the OCs.

Tony didn’t waste any time. The the group set up a card table at a local farmers market with a banner that read “Old Coots Giving Advice — It’s Probably Bad Advice, But It’s Free.” The idea was for people to come by and get advice for anything they were needing that day—for free.

The result? People were really into the idea.

“It started as a joke, but it’s become a phenomenon,” Caputo said. “Somebody told us the other day that we’re the most popular attraction at the market. We always listen carefully and don’t give gratuitous advice.”

Every Saturday since that summer, the group sets up camp at the market and gives advice to about 30-40 people a day who come by their booth. There’s just one rule: Any questions related to religion or politics aren’t allowed. But other than that—free range.

“To be truthful, I’m not sure that any of us can claim to have much wisdom,” said John Lesnan, another OC, “but it sure has been a lot of fun. Maybe all of us coots really do have more to offer than we thought.”

How cute is this idea? Would you ever stop by the “Old Coots” booth to get some free life advice? We could all use it!
