If you’re traveling to a vacation or business destination via an airplane, you don’t want to arrive at your destination feeling sick because of something you ate. In order to stay feeling as good as possible while up in the air, there are certain rules that flight attendants recommend following, and many of them have to do with what you do and do not eat and drink while on the plane.

Yahoo! Life reports that there are 5 types of foods and beverages flight attendants urge you to avoid.

Let’s talk about beverages first. When the flight attendant comes to your seat and asks what you’d like to drink, order something other than coffee or tea.

We get it. You might be tired and think that coffee or tea would be just what you need to help you feel energized. If that’s the case, buy it at the airport before you get on the plane.

The problem with ordering these beverages has to do with the water used to make them. The water tanks are hardly ever cleaned. That means the water inside is breading ground for bacteria.

The second type of beverage you want to avoid is anything alcoholic. Again, we get it. You might be a nervous flyer or simply want to relax and think an alcoholic drink will be just the thing.

The problem here is that you are more likely to feel more drunk in the air than you would on the ground. Your body can’t absorb oxygen as well due to the air pressure. That means you might end up feeling pretty sick.

Now let’s talk about what foods to avoid. First, let’s talk about the foods you should avoid due to potential safety issues. Flight attendants recommend that you avoid ordering any food item that contains meat.

The problem here is that it’s possible the meat may not have been stored correctly, or if there were any flight delays, it’s possible the meat may have been stored longer than is safe to be consumed. You don’t want to chance getting food poisoning, especially when you’re dealing with airplane bathrooms.

The next food item you should avoid actually includes a range of items, and this is more out of consideration for other passengers than it is for a safety reason.

Avoid eating anything that has a really strong smell, such as chips or nuts that have a flavor like BBQ, onion or garlic. Another really bad one (or possibly the worst) is roasted corn nuts. Flight attendants think this particular food makes it smell like the plane is burning.

The final type of food that you should avoid is also something that is out of consideration for yourself and other passengers. Avoid anything that is gassy. Air is recirculated on the plane, and if you pass gas, everyone continues to breath that stinky air in for the duration of the flight.
