A second grade child died January 24 after a tragedy in the school drop off line in Borger, Texas, which is about 50 miles from Amarillo, Texas. In a statement to PEOPLE on Monday, Jan. 27, Borger Assistant City Manager and Public Information Officer Brandon Strope identified the victim as 8-year-old Serenity Campos. He described her passing on Jan. 24 as a “heartbreaking loss” for the community.

“According to multiple witness accounts, Serenity exited a vehicle in the designated student drop-off area of the Gateway Elementary parking lot,” Strope said. The accident occurred because “her coat became caught in the vehicle’s door without the driver’s knowledge.” “As the vehicle began to pull away, the motion caused Serenity to fall and be struck by the vehicle. Despite immediate emergency medical intervention performed on the scene, on the way to and at the hospital, Serenity did not survive,” the city official said to PEOPLE.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Serenity’s family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time.” He added that therapy dogs and counselors are available at Gateway Elementary School.

On Friday, a local Walmart donated 40 stuffed animals to be placed at the memorial honoring the child in front of the school.

A GoFundMe has been established in Serenity’s name to help her parents pay for the funeral expenses along with day to day needs for their family.

Her obituary describes Serenity as having “had a huge heart and loved BIG. She was a caring and protective big sister and friend, or “little mom,” who hated to see anybody crying or sad. Serenity was a friend to everyone, and claimed many people as “cousins,” even if they weren’t actually related to her. She knew no stranger, and wanted to always be around her friends. Serenity had a contagious smile – and she was ALWAYS smiling!”

“Serenity was planning to have her own YouTube channel. She loved taking selfies and planning what she was going to broadcast. She was super smart (always having straight-A’s) and accepting of everyone.”

Serenity is lovingly remembered by her parents, Daniel and Daniela Campos; her sisters, Braylee and Haisley; her brother, Asher; and many other cherished family members.

Rest In Peace.
